Woven Snakes
Limited Edition /400
This image of a Red-sided Garter Snake gathering titled Woven Snakes, was taken during spring at the world-famous Narcisse Snake Dens in Manitoba. Every year, tens of thousands of snakes emerge from their winter dens, creating one of the largest reptile gatherings on Earth as they compete to mate before dispersing across the surrounding prairie.
At first glance, the image appears almost abstract. Dozens of striped bodies weave over and beneath one another, forming an intricate tapestry of curves, patterns, and movement. Only after taking a closer look do the individual snakes emerge from the chaos, each one contributing to one of nature's most extraordinary spectacles.
Creating this photograph meant finding the perfect balance between order and disorder. I wanted an image that showcased the incredible scale of the event while still allowing individual snakes to stand out throughout the frame. With constant movement in every direction, every second changed the composition, making patience and timing essential to capturing a scene that felt both artistic and true to the moment.
"Standing beside thousands of moving snakes was unlike anything I'd experienced before. What first looked like complete chaos slowly revealed an incredible natural pattern that I knew I wanted to capture." – Jared
