Orange & Green Kids
Limited Edition /400
This image of a Rufous Hummingbird titled Green and Orange Kids, was taken in the ancient old-growth forests near Sidney, British Columbia, on Vancouver Island. Hidden among towering cedar branches, a tiny nest held two hungry chicks while their devoted mother worked tirelessly from sunrise to sunset, gathering enough nectar and insects to keep them growing.
Perched for only a fleeting moment, the female Rufous Hummingbird watches over her young as two tiny beaks reach skyward in anticipation of their next meal. Surrounded by moss, lichens, and soft forest light, this intimate scene captures both the beauty and relentless determination of one of Canada's smallest birds.
Photographing this nest required patience above all else. Every visit was brief and carefully timed to avoid disturbing the family, with long periods spent quietly observing from a respectful distance. The mother returned only for seconds at a time before disappearing back into the forest, making each opportunity to capture the complete family together incredibly rare.
"Watching this tiny mother tirelessly care for two growing chicks was a reminder that some of nature's greatest displays of strength come in its smallest packages." – Jared
