Mossy Drake
Limited Edition /1250
This image of a Wood Duck titled Mossy Drake, was photographed in Victoria, British Columbia, during the late spring. As fresh greens returned to the forest and wetlands came alive with breeding birds, this brilliantly coloured drake paused on a moss-covered branch, offering a portrait that perfectly captures one of North America's most spectacular ducks.
Perched above the water, the Wood Duck's iridescent emerald head, rich chestnut breast, and intricate feather patterns stand in vivid contrast against the vibrant moss beneath its feet. Soft spring light and a creamy background isolate the bird, allowing every colour and detail to shine while highlighting the remarkable beauty of this unmistakable species.
Wood Ducks are often cautious and quick to disappear into overhanging vegetation, making clean portraits surprisingly difficult to achieve. I spent time quietly observing this bird's favourite perch, waiting for it to return naturally. For only a few moments, it settled onto the moss-covered branch, turned slightly toward the light, and revealed the brilliant colours that make Wood Ducks one of my favourite birds to photograph.
"Every time I photograph a Wood Duck, I'm amazed that something with colours this vibrant can exist in the wild. They almost look hand-painted, yet this is nature at its finest." – Jared
