Few seabirds are as instantly recognizable as the Tufted Puffin. With its striking orange bill, elegant golden head plumes, and bold black-and-white plumage, it looks almost too colourful to be real. Despite their charismatic appearance, Tufted Puffins spend most of their lives far from shore, riding the swells of the open Pacific before returning to isolated coastal islands each breeding season.

I photographed this individual in the waters just outside Tofino, British Columbia, where the nutrient-rich Pacific Ocean supports an incredible diversity of marine life. Calm seas offered a rare opportunity to photograph this puffin at eye level as it drifted effortlessly across the water, its vivid colours reflected in the gentle ripples below. Moments like these are fleeting and a reminder of just how special it is to encounter one of Canada's most iconic seabirds in its natural environment.
