This image of a Grizzly Bear titled Gaze from the Thicket, was taken in British Columbia coast on a partly sunny, brisk day during the salmon run, and while I have tried to get this image again, I am realizing now it might be once in a lifetime.

A close, unflinching stare through a screen of wet leaves — the bear’s face fills the frame, eyes steady and nostrils flecked with river grit. The surrounding thicket compresses the scene into an intimate portrait that feels like a private moment caught between tides of green.

This shot was next to impossible because the animal appeared without warning from the bush behind our photo group; there was no time to reposition or reset exposure. The patchy sunlight filtered through foliage, forcing rapid adjustments to keep skin and fur tones natural, while staying mindful of distance and safety meant I had to trust a single, reflexive frame.
