Wildlife, street photography, motion blur, cityscapes, and a first look at the 100–400mm G Master
Introduction
New York City might seem like an unusual place to field-test a high-resolution camera.
Most of my photography happens around wildlife, birds, and natural landscapes, but New York offered something completely different. Within a couple of days, I could photograph spring migrants in Central Park, fast-moving street scenes, architecture, traffic, distant skyline details, and the constant motion of Manhattan.
That variety made the city an ideal place to explore what the new Sony A7R VI could do outside of a controlled setting.
I brought three very different lenses: my 14mm for immersive cityscapes, the 70–200mm for compressed street scenes and architectural details, and I was able to borrow and test the brand-new 100–400mm G Master that I was especially excited to test with birds in Central Park.

The A7R VI combines a 66.8-megapixel stacked full-frame sensor with high-speed shooting and improved subject recognition, creating a camera designed to balance extreme resolution with the speed needed for action.
Why New York City Was the Perfect Test
New York rarely gives a photographer time to prepare.
People cross the street without warning. Taxis disappear between buildings. Birds move through small openings in the trees. Reflections change as clouds pass over the skyline, and a scene that looks interesting one moment may be completely gone seconds later.
That unpredictability made the city a much more useful test than photographing charts or stationary subjects.
I wanted to see how the A7R VI handled situations that demanded both speed and detail.
Could it track a tiny warbler moving through Central Park?
Could its large files preserve the textures of Manhattan’s architecture?
Would the resolution give me freedom to crop street photographs without losing the atmosphere of the original frame?
Most importantly, would it remain enjoyable to use during long days of walking around the city?



Spring Migration in Central Park
Central Park was one of the main reasons I visited New York during the spring.
Surrounded by buildings, traffic, and millions of people, the park becomes an important resting place for birds migrating north. Within minutes of leaving the busy streets, I was walking beneath fresh green leaves while warblers, vireos, thrushes, and other migrants moved through the trees.
The contrast never stopped feeling unusual.
Car horns echoed beyond the park while small songbirds fed quietly above the trails. One moment I was photographing a warbler, and the next I could see Manhattan’s skyline rising behind the canopy.
It was the perfect place to test whether the A7R VI could truly combine a high-resolution sensor with wildlife performance.



Testing the 100–400mm GM With Birds.. and a Raccoon
The 100–400mm G Master became my primary lens in Central Park.
Its focal range provided enough reach for small birds in the trees while remaining easier to carry through Manhattan than my usual 200–600mm. The lens covers a versatile 100–400mm range, focuses as close as approximately 0.98 metres, and includes optical stabilization—features that make it useful for both distant wildlife and smaller details nearby.
What I appreciated most was the flexibility.
At 400mm, I could isolate a bird moving through the leaves. When a subject suddenly flew closer or landed lower in the branches, I could quickly zoom back and include more of the surroundings.
That became especially useful in Central Park, where birds often appeared at unpredictable distances and backgrounds changed constantly.
The lens also suited the camera’s high-resolution sensor. Fine feather detail remained visible, and the large files gave me enough room to crop when a small migrant stayed high or far away.
I also encountered this raccoon, which I have now called "Living in NYC" a snap I did not expect, but turned out to be one of my favourite raccoon photos ever.

Autofocus and Birds in Motion
High resolution is only useful for wildlife when the camera can place that detail where it belongs.
Spring migrants are difficult subjects. They rarely remain still, often move behind branches, and can jump between sunlight and shadow in seconds.
The A7R VI’s subject recognition and autofocus tracking allowed me to concentrate more on the bird’s behaviour and less on constantly repositioning the focus point. The camera can shoot at up to 30 frames per second with autofocus and auto-exposure tracking, giving it far more action capability than I would normally associate with an ultra-high-resolution body.
I still needed to anticipate movement and choose clear shooting angles, but the camera kept pace surprisingly well.
When a bird briefly turned its head or landed in an open patch of light, I had a better chance of capturing the exact frame I wanted.



The Resolution Test
The most obvious strength of the A7R VI is its resolution.
At 66.8 megapixels, the files contain an enormous amount of information.
That became valuable almost everywhere in New York.
With birds, I could crop tighter when a subject remained high in a tree. With cityscapes, I could zoom into distant buildings and still find small architectural details. With street photographs, I could refine a composition afterward while preserving enough resolution for a detailed print.
The biggest surprise was not simply how much I could crop.
It was how much the files encouraged me to explore each frame.
When viewing an image later, I often noticed expressions, signs, reflections, and small background elements that I had not seen while taking the photograph.
The camera did not replace careful composition, but it gave me far more flexibility when photographing scenes that developed too quickly to perfect in the moment.

Street Photography Around Manhattan
After leaving Central Park, I spent time walking through Manhattan with the 70–200mm.
This lens created a very different kind of street photograph.
Rather than standing close to people with a wide-angle lens, I could work from farther away and isolate small moments within the surrounding chaos.
Pedestrians appeared between taxis.
People crossed through narrow openings in crowds.
Steam, signs, reflections, and shadows created layers that changed every few seconds.
The 70–200mm also allowed me to compress the city. Buildings that were separated by several blocks appeared stacked together, creating photographs that better reflected how dense New York feels when walking through it.
The A7R VI’s resolution worked especially well for these scenes because even distant faces, signs, and textures remained surprisingly clear.



Testing Motion Blur
Not every photograph needed to be perfectly sharp.
One of the tests I enjoyed most involved slowing the shutter speed and allowing the city to move through the frame.
Yellow taxis became streaks of colour.
Pedestrians blurred as they crossed intersections.
Cyclists passed through otherwise static architectural scenes.
Instead of freezing New York, I wanted to show how the city feels—constant, layered, and rarely still.
The high-resolution sensor made these images particularly interesting. Stationary buildings and signs retained fine detail while moving subjects dissolved into soft shapes around them.
I experimented with slower shutter speeds, sometimes keeping the camera still and sometimes panning with a moving taxi or cyclist.
The results were less predictable than the wildlife photographs, but that unpredictability suited New York perfectly.



Testing the 14mm in the City
The 14mm lens became my choice when I wanted to show the full scale of Manhattan.
New York often feels too large for a conventional frame. Buildings rise directly overhead, streets stretch through deep urban canyons, and every scene contains more information than the eye can process at once.
The wide perspective allowed me to photograph from close to the action while still including the surrounding architecture.
I used it for intersections, towering buildings, subway entrances, street-level scenes, and broad views where the city itself became the subject.
The key was finding something strong in the foreground.
A taxi, a person crossing the street, a reflection, or a road marking helped lead the viewer into the wider scene. Without that foreground element, the scale of the city could easily overwhelm the composition.
Cityscape and Architecture Tests
New York’s skyline offered a direct test of the camera’s ability to resolve small details.
From wider viewpoints, I photographed layers of windows, rooftop structures, bridges, signs, and buildings extending far into the distance.
With the 16mm, I focused on scale and dramatic perspective.
With the 70–200mm, I isolated patterns and compressed distant buildings together.
The 100–400mm created an entirely different view of the city. At the longer end, I could pick out individual rooftop details, distant windows, and sections of the skyline that were almost invisible to the naked eye.
This was where the A7R VI’s resolution felt especially impressive. The files held together even when examining very small sections of the original image.
For large cityscape prints, that detail could make a noticeable difference.



Low Light and Changing Conditions
New York rarely offered consistent light.
Central Park included deep shadows beneath the trees, while the surrounding buildings reflected bright sunlight into certain streets. Later in the day, artificial lighting, storefronts, and traffic became part of the scene.
The stacked sensor provides faster readout than previous cameras in the A7R line, while Sony also lists expanded dynamic range and dependable low-light autofocus among the camera’s improvements.
In practice, I found the files gave me plenty of room to work with highlights and shadows.
This was especially useful in the city, where a single frame could contain bright sky, reflective glass, and dark street-level details.
As expected with a high-resolution sensor, I still tried to expose carefully rather than relying entirely on recovering the image later.

The Three-Lens Setup
Sony 14mm
The 14mm was best for showing the size, energy, and architecture of New York.
It placed the viewer directly inside the scene and worked especially well for dramatic cityscapes, broad intersections, towering buildings, and immersive street photography.
Sony 70–200mm
The 70–200mm became my main street and detail lens.
It allowed me to isolate people naturally, compress busy city scenes, photograph architectural details, and create cleaner compositions within visually crowded locations.

Sony 100–400mm G Master
The 100–400mm was the most versatile lens of the trip.
It provided the reach needed for migrating birds in Central Park while remaining useful for distant city details, compressed skyline images, and unexpected subjects around Manhattan.
Although Sony identifies it as its first G Master super-telephoto zoom rather than a newly introduced optical design, the copy I carried was brand new to my kit and this was my first opportunity to properly field-test it.



What Surprised Me Most
Before the trip, I expected the A7R VI to be primarily about image quality.
The resolution was certainly impressive, but the speed surprised me more.
It did not feel like a camera that needed to be reserved for landscapes, architecture, or slow studio work. I could photograph a warbler moving through leaves, turn toward a cyclist passing along the street, and later use the same camera for a carefully composed cityscape.
That versatility changed the way I thought about the A7R series.
The camera still rewards careful technique. Large files reveal small focusing errors, camera movement, and lens limitations very clearly.
But when everything comes together, the level of detail is remarkable.

File Size and Workflow
The large files are one of the camera’s greatest strengths, but they also require preparation.
Memory cards fill quickly, especially when photographing birds at high burst rates. Transfers take longer, editing demands more storage, and a full day of shooting can create a significant amount of data.
I found myself becoming more selective with bursts.
Instead of holding the shutter continuously, I tried to anticipate behaviour and photograph the moments that mattered. This made reviewing the images easier and reduced the number of nearly identical files.
Anyone considering a camera with this much resolution should think about the complete workflow—not just the camera body.
Fast cards, dependable storage, backups, and a computer capable of comfortably processing the files all become part of the experience.
Who the Sony A7R VI Is For
After using it throughout New York, I see the A7R VI as a camera for photographers who need extreme detail but do not want to sacrifice speed.
Landscape and cityscape photographers will naturally benefit from the resolution.
Wildlife photographers gain the ability to crop while still retaining detailed files.
Street photographers can capture quickly changing scenes and refine compositions afterward.
The camera may be more than some photographers need, particularly when smaller files and simpler workflows are priorities.
But for someone who produces large prints, photographs small or distant wildlife, or frequently moves between different genres, the combination is extremely compelling.

Conclusion
New York City gave me almost every kind of photographic situation I could have asked for.
In Central Park, I tested the A7R VI and 100–400mm GM on fast-moving spring migrants.
Across Manhattan, I photographed street scenes, motion blur, architecture, distant skyline details, and the scale of the city with three very different lenses.
The camera handled all of those situations without feeling limited to one genre.
Its resolution was exceptional, but the real story was how usable that resolution became when paired with fast autofocus, high-speed shooting, and the right lens.
The 14mm showed the size of New York.
The 70–200mm helped me find order within the chaos.
The 100–400mm connected the two sides of the trip, working equally well for birds in Central Park and distant details across the city.
For me, the best camera tests do not happen in controlled environments.
They happen while walking all day, reacting to unpredictable subjects, working through changing light, and returning home with photographs that could not have been planned in advance.
New York provided exactly that.
